Chapter 31

Tameka set her phone on the table in front of her. “I spoke to Nikolai,” she said softly. “He told me he’d send a text as soon as he finds the elevator-cam videos we’re looking for.”

Addison and Tameka were sitting under an umbrella in a sunny corner of the rooftop. It was Tuesday, and they had arranged to meet there during break, buying lunch from the Splash Bar with their employee discounts.

Addison looked around to be sure they were out of earshot of any residents, noting that the two Karens who had bitched about Tameka were sitting by the pool. They didn’t look over, and Addison understood that as far as they were concerned, the two employees having their lunch were all but invisible.

“Thank you,” she said, reaching over to give Tameka’s arm an affectionate squeeze.

Her plan was to show her uncle the video proof of Melody’s crime so that he could no longer deny it. Surely he would come to his senses about being involved with her once the evidence was clear. And then there was the egg itself. If Arnie couldn’t get it back from her, Nikolai almost certainly could.

Tameka smiled and dug into her salad. “How was your driving lesson yesterday?”

Her expression conveyed that the question was loaded—she wasn’t really asking about driving. But Addison just swallowed a mouthful of turkey sandwich and said, “I’m getting better.”

It was a tease, of course, and Tameka gave her a good-natured shake of the head. “You know what I mean.”

A wind blew across the rooftop, and Addison slapped her hand on the napkins before they were carried off. She tucked them under her sweating iced tea. “We had a very frank chat.”

“About?”

Addison leaned over and sucked on her straw. “I told him I’m celibate.”

“No shit?” Tameka said, surprised. “And how did he take that?”

“He was relieved.”

“Relieved?”

“Because he thought I was banging Dante, who he thinks is bad news.”

“News flash: you are banging—”

“Shush!” Addison interrupted. “That was once.” She paused to think about their night together and added, “Okay, twice. But it’ll never happen again.”

“So it was . . . a moment of weakness?”

“Not really,” Addison explained. “I just thought I could sleep with him and it wouldn’t really count since he’s not my type.”

Tameka laughed. “You thought you could get laid and be celibate at the same time?”

“When you put it like that . . .”

“And how is that snack not your type? He’s everyone’s type. Even old Sally Conrad thinks he’s the whole meal.”

“I didn’t mean physically. Because trust me, Dante is one of the hottest guys I’ve ever met. I meant in terms of an emotional connection. I thought he was safe because I would never develop feelings for someone like that. And he just didn’t strike me as someone who developed feelings at all. Too messy in terms of his sex life.”

“But now that you’ve slept with him?”

Addison sighed. “I don’t know. It didn’t feel like just sex, though. And check this out.” She retrieved her phone and opened the text message from Dante, turning it toward Tameka.
